2012 Program Info

Overnight Camp
Established in 1935, founder Harry Burroughs saw an opportunity to foster children from the inner city of Boston by introducing them to the beauty of the outdoors in a summer camp environment.  Today, our program serves boys and girls from all over New England.  Our camp, located on a mile long stretch of crystal clear waters of Thompson Lake in Poland, Maine, allows our campers to experience the outdoors with 400 acres of outdoor beauty, hiking trails, playing fields, and camp sites.  We have on-site medical care at the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation Health Center and wholesome meals served daily in our extraordinary Dining Hall.  Our participants come from all walks of life and we welcome you to learn more about our partnerships with Easter Seals of Massachusetts for campers with physical disabilities, as well as a special session for children with autism and any other areas that may need special support.  We offer a sliding scale fee to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to experience the world of summer camp.  A financial form is available in the application. “For more details on daily activities, the Teen Leadership and Staff-In-Training Programs, 2012 dates and more, visit our Camper Information Page.

Our Traditional Camp Program is designed for children ages 8-13, with a goal of introducing the outdoor environment to children who have limited or no experience with nature as well as familiarizing them with the concept of a welcoming, safe and inclusive community. Our campers learn about diversity and tolerance, cooperation and team work, while building skills that ultimately result in future leadership roles. Our camp, located on a on a mile long stretch of the crystal clear waters of Thompson Lake in Poland, Maine, allows our campers to experience the outdoors with 400 acres of outdoor beauty, hiking trails, playing fields, and camp sites.

The Teen Leadership Program for ages 14-17 stresses job readiness, life and leadership skills, and civic participation through workshops and real-world experiences. One of the goals for our teens is to become full-time, seasonal counselors at our camp, as well as role models in their communities. This passing down of Agassiz Village’s values and sense of belongings has become the trademark of its success. The perpetuation of these role models breeds leadership, self-sufficiency, responsibility, and independence among our teen leaders in the communities with which they live.

Partnerships

Easter Seals of Massachusetts Partnership
Agassiz Village has partnered with Easter Seals of Massachusetts since 1965. Our work with this agency allows disabled youth the chance to enjoy typical summer camp activities side-by-side able bodied campers. We are the only camp in New England that provides this inclusive and diverse camping experience. A special session for campers with autism is scheduled in August. Please contact our office at (781)860-0200 or Colleen Flanagan at Easter Seals directly at 1(800)244-2756, ext. 410 for more info on all of our special needs programs.

Volunteers of America Northern New England (VOANNE)
We are excited to announce our newly formed relationships with Volunteers of America Northern New England (VOANNE), which runs Camp POSTCARD. Camp POSTCARD is in its 18th year and benefits some of Maine's most under-served fifth and sixth graders through direct involvement and mentoring with a variety of law enforcement and Criminal Justice professionals. The program is staffed by over 75 volunteer State Troopers and runs for one week in mid-June.
